Chapter Seven
"Please let me in."
Filled with sadness and longing and so much love it made her heart hurt, Deacon's voice not only called to every fiber of her being, but it also spoke to Everleigh's soul. But she wasn't ready. Couldn't face him. Not yet. She needed to be sure. Had to hear it all just one more time.
Yeah, it shouldâve been enough to have Issy tell her everything sheâd picked up before, during, and after their fight in the caves. But Ever really needed to hear it from the omnipotent Being known as Fate one more time. After all, how many times does a Mexican Black Bear Shifter from a tiny town in Texas get to talk to Fate?
"You know he's not ever going to stop, right?" The tall, gorgeous woman reiterated for what seemed like the hundredth time. "Do you have any other questions for me? Or do you just like torturing Deacon? If it's the latter, well, that's between the two of you. I've messed with him enough over the last sixteen years. If it's the other, then out with it, Girlie. I got people to see and a Universe to keep in the balance, just little things like that."
"Okay," Everleigh nodded. "I really do understand, and I promise that I believe you. I just needâ¦."
"You just need to hear the story one more time. It still seems too farfetched to be real. You have to be sure since you got your heart broken once already, but you still really love the guy and want to trust him, but damn this is one crazy story."
"Yeah, that."
âI understand,â Fate nodded. âI went through the same thing with Duncanâs Mate, too. I will probably be explaining what happened this time to her, too. Like an idiot, I made her a promise the first time we spoke, and Iâm a stickler about keeping my promises.â Waving her hand, she chuckled, âBut thatâs a story for another time.â
âThank you so much,â Everleigh nodded. âAnd it is nice to know Iâm not the only crazy Mate out there.â
"Nope, not even close, but this is the last time, okay?â Leveling her gaze, Fate started at the beginning for the third, or maybe it was the fourth time. "As long as the earth has turned around the sun, the Dragons of Fate have been Dragons of the Stone Family Clan. Luckily, it skips a generation, or weâd run out of Stone Dragons.â
Chuckling at Her own joke, She continued, âHow it works is that from every other cycle of births, four brothers are born to the Forebearer. The Universe appoints him upon his Mating. Itâs a whole thing â a great honor â and both he and his Mate know the score. They freely consent to having four boys and raising each one until he is two years old, then giving them up to serve a higher purpose. Iâve been told about the ceremony. Itâs just not something I like to be involved with.â
A slight pause and She was off and running again.
